PETER $UN SIGNS TO RED BULL RECORDS AND RELEASES DELUXE VERSION OF BREAKOUT ALBUM ‘SCUMBABY’

Today, Red Bull Records is thrilled to announce its latest signing, emerging indie hip-hop artist Peter $un, and unveil a special deluxe edition of his breakout album, Scumbaby

Released in partnership with Mind of a Genius, the digital deluxe comes on the first anniversary of its initial release and features three new tracks, including a remix of “Wylin’” by rapper Katori Walker and the bouncing, R&B-driven single “No Bad Days.” Referring to the duality of humanity, Scumbaby captures Peter $un as he explores the good and the bad through his music. A juxtaposition of the dark thoughts and feelings we often face versus the purity of boundless creativity, the album serves as a quintessential showcase of Peter $un’s own sonic journey of identity.

I wanted a way to describe my own story in a word,” says Peter $un. “Scum is the bad, the ugly, the side of us we are usually insecure about, and the word baby reminds me of innocence. Before consciousness when you are your most free and imaginative. When you think of ‘scumbaby,’ I want to think of the freedom to express yourself how you want, when you want. Scumbaby is for the people, man. I’m all of us.”

“The partnership felt terrific from the first email I sent to Kenny ‘Tick’ Salcido about potentially joining forces,” says Mind of a Genius Founder, David Dann. “Mind of a Genius and Red Bull Records share many of the same values when it comes to artist development, and we’re delighted to finally be in business. I don’t think we could have found a better home to partner with for Peter $un.”

The signing of Peter $un emphasizes a very important goal of wanting to work with best talent and executives in the business,” says Red Bull Records SVP / Head of A&R, Kenny ‘Tick’ Salcido. “David Dann and the Mind of a Genius team have been at the forefront of identifying and nurturing great talent. The A&R team felt Peter $un, with his voice, lyrics, and eclectic sounds, fit right into our passion for bending and breaking genres.”

The release of the Scumbaby deluxe album follows a return to the road for Peter $un, joining rapper Al-Doms on a series of East Coast tour dates. With new music to come in 2022, Peter $un shines as a bourgeoning artist to watch.

Peter $un Unveils Anticipated EP 3PIECE Featuring the Single “PERFECT TIMING”

Rapper, producer, and vocalist Peter $un today released his first project in a year. Aptly titled, 3PIECE, the EP spans three tracks for every mood this summer, packed with bouncy flows and addictive basslines. The EP single, “PERFECT TIMING” takes a simple yet confident approach in its slow burn, highlighting Sunny’s knack for bona fide rhymes and laid-back grooves. Virginia-born and California-based, he effortlessly blends the best of Richmond’s beat scene with the brighter tones of Los Angeles hip-hop, flexing his range of influences that have cemented him as a crossover tastemaker.

Sunny shares, “One of my favorite anime shows is ‘One Piece’ so the project is somewhat of an ode to it as far as the art direction. The overall vibe I wanted was for people to just feel good and dance. I think it shows the different aspects of life and phases that all people go through. It’s a little something for everyone.

Sunny’s soulful roots and love for jazz are evident in the attention to instrumentalism and melody across his tracks, earning fans in everyone from Zane Lowe to Russ. Following his last record Phone Calls Gimme Anxiety, which saw him work through the loss of his brother, he returned this year with a renewed sense of creativity and optimism, kicking the package off with his upbeat house-inspired single, “MY FAVORITE DRUG.”

Next up, Sunny’s live rendition of the EP track, “BURN LIKE FIRE” will debut via SpringHill’s coveted “On Site” YouTube series, giving rising artists a platform built by LeBron James and Maverick Carter. Later in September, he’ll partner with Red Bull Media House and award-winning nonprofit Ghetto Film School to unveil $unny Daze, a short film directed by Lexx Truss, a burgeoning LA-based filmmaker under Red Bull’s Establishing Shot mentorship program which aims to amplify and support diverse storytellers. Sunny’s mini-documentary will pull back the curtain on his creative endeavors, the making of 3PIECE, and the infectious lust for life that he brings to his community.

Peter $un Commissions Blinkie, Jae Murphy, Karen Nyame KG, and Uncle Kizzy For MY FAVORITE DRUG (Remixes)

Richmond, VA-to-LA rapper, producer, and vocalist Peter $un today delivered his last release of the year. Off his infectious summer EP, 3PIECE, the groovy lead single “MY FAVORITE DRUG” received the remix treatment from the likes of UK tastemaker Blinkie, DMV scene-shapers Jae Murphy and Uncle Kizzy, and the goddess of rhythm, Karen Nyame KG. Each version breathes new life into the track, from chill lo-fi vibes, to percussive Amapiano, to unadulterated house made for the dance floor. The four-pack showcases the global versatility of Sunny’s sound while celebrating the authentic stylings of each producer on the project.

Sunny shares, “It’s really fire to see various producers’ perspectives on ‘MY FAVORITE DRUG.’ Sonically, the different energies are amazing and I feel like they’re all perfect for whatever mood you’re in at that moment. Blinkies’ mix sets the tone for my upbeat energy, while Uncle Kizzy’s slower, intimate mix can be a vibe with your lady friend or mans in quieter moments.”

Blinkie adds, “As soon as I heard the original version of this track, the chords for the remix came to me. I wanted to keep the soul of the original but put my spin on it.”

This year has proven to be one of growth and evolution for Sunny, following his deeply personal Phone Calls Gimme Anxiety project. Leaning into a more optimistic sound, 3PIECE packs a punch with its bouncy flows and addictive basslines, radiating the feel-good tones from the summer. In August, the EP track “BURN LIKE FIRE” got its own moment to shine as Sunny performed a special live rendition for SpringHill’s “On Site” YouTube series. Later that month, he partnered with Red Bull Media House and Ghetto Film School to share his story behind “PERFECT TIMING” in a short film titled $unny Daze, directed by rising LA-based filmmaker, Lexx Truss. Today’s remix package keeps the dynamic energy of “MY FAVORITE DRUG” flowing into next year, with more to come from Sunny soon.

PETER $UN RELEASES NEW EP ‘PHONE CALLS GIMME ANXIETY’

Virginia-bred, LA-based artist / producer, Peter $un, returns with his new EP ‘Phone Calls Gimme Anxiety’ out today. Creating the project was a therapeutic and transformative endeavor for Peter $un. The rapper, vocalist, producer, and mental health advocate channeled everything from his experiences and emotions navigating his career to the loss of his brother to drug addiction into the music. He elaborates, “This is my most vulnerable. I feel like it’s my growing process from ‘Scumbaby’. It’s a cocoon phase before the album where the transformation happens. This project was a venting moment for me and a closing chapter on my past.”

Consciously releasing during Minority Mental Health Awareness Month (July), Phone Calls Gimme Anxiety opens with lead single “Metamorphosis (Butterfly),” an intentional and aspirational piece about embracing change and manifesting evolution. Sunny shares, “This was inspired by an energy of renewal. This was one of the first songs I wrote after my brother passing that I spoke on it at all. It was like a release of pent-up emotions and just throwing it all out. The message is growth. Learning how to deal with growing pains and becoming the person I see myself as and leaving the old me behind.” Watch the “Metamorphosis” video HERE.

Throughout the six-track EP, Peter $un expresses themes of personal growth, self-awareness, escapism, and retribution before ending with “U Smell Like Da Color Yellow,” — an eloquent nod to the neo-soul movement and his mother, who first introduced him to the power of music as therapy. ‘Phone Calls Gimme Anxiety’ sets the tone for Peter $un’s next chapter and has received praise from All Hip-Hop, Attack the Culture, Consequence, Elevator, HipHopDX, HipHopWired, and more.
